A 50-nuevo-peso note from the Banco Central del Uruguay, issued in 1981 under Law No. 14,316, and printed by Thomas de la Rue. The front shows José Gervasio Artigas, named on the note, in profile, beside the national coat of arms with its scales, hill, horse and ox. The back shows a large colonnaded public building. Artigas led the early 19th-century independence struggle and is regarded as Uruguay's national hero; the nuevo peso replaced the old peso at 1000 to 1 in 1975.
