A 200-pound note from the Central Bank of Syria, of a design first issued in 2009; this example is dated 2021. The front shows the great wooden water wheels, or norias, of Hama, with a stone building, domes and a minaret behind them. The back carries a large carved rosette and geometric star patterns in the Islamic decorative tradition. The norias of Hama have lifted water from the Orontes river for centuries.
