Issued by the Banco Central de São Tomé e Príncipe under the decree of 22 October 1996, the front shows Rei Amador, the 16th-century leader of an enslaved people's revolt, alongside the endemic ossobó (emerald cuckoo) and the national arms. The reverse depicts a river bridge set against forested volcanic peaks, and the note was printed by Thomas de la Rue.
