The front shows a portrait of the educationist and nationalist Alvan Ikoku (1900–1971), and the back shows young women in traditional dress carrying calabashes, with the Nigerian coat of arms. This red and orange paper ten-naira design was used from 1984 until it was replaced by a polymer note in 2007.
