Back

A state note (Biglietto di Stato) of the Italian Republic, authorised by a law of 1966. The front shows the head of Arethusa, a nymph from Sicilian legend, with dolphins and an eagle gripping a serpent, set above stylised waves. The back carries the value inside a large coiled, scaled ornament over the sea. Small notes like this were later replaced by a 500 lire coin.
