Banca d'Italia 500 lire showing an allegorical young woman crowned with ears of wheat, with an orange Medusa head after Caravaggio in the central seal, which gives the series its 'Medusa' nickname. This first issue, dated by ministerial decree of 14 August 1947, was among Italy's earliest post-war high-denomination notes and remained in production until 1961.
