A 1000 lire note from the Banca d'Italia, first issued in 1962. The front shows the composer Giuseppe Verdi, named as 'G. Verdi', in a bow tie, beside a classical head set in an orange rosette and the words 'Lire Mille'. The back is mainly ornamental, with 'Lire Mille' and the bank's name in a large guilloche roundel. Verdi, composer of operas such as Aida and La Traviata, was also a symbol of Italian unification.
