A 1000 lire note from the Banca d'Italia, authorised by decree of 3 October 1990. The front shows Maria Montessori, the physician and educator, named beside her portrait, with the bank's seal bearing the winged lion of Saint Mark on a colourful patterned background. The back shows two children absorbed in reading and writing at a table. Montessori's teaching method, developed in Rome in the early 1900s, is used in schools worldwide.
