A 1000 lire note from the Banca d'Italia, authorised by decree of 6 January 1982. The front shows the Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo, named beside the portrait, with the bank's seal bearing the winged lion of Saint Mark. The back shows the Gothic arcades and windows of the Doge's Palace in Venice, drawn at a steep angle. This design circulated until it was replaced by the Montessori note in 1990.
