Issued by the Reserve Bank of India, with a promise to pay guaranteed by the central government. The front shows the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's national emblem, and the bank's seal with a tiger and palm tree. The back shows a formal garden in the Mughal style, with a pavilion at the end of a tree-lined walk and water channels, and the value in many Indian languages. This brown and orange design was replaced by the Mahatma Gandhi series from 1996.
