Thuringian emergency money (Notgeld) issued by the town of Altenburg in 1921, printed by J. A. Schwarz of Lindenberg im Allgäu. The front shows a fortified town tower flanked by the civic emblems of the hand and rose above a shield with a lion, and the reverse illustrates the 1455 Saxon Prince Robbery (Sächsischer Prinzenraub), in which the charcoal burner Georg Schmidt struck down one of the von Kauffungen raiders with his poker and freed the abducted Prince Albrecht.
