A 50 milliard mark note from October 1923, at the height of German hyperinflation. Within weeks it was worth only a few pfennigs as the rentenmark replaced the paper mark.

What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 10 October 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 5 million marks to post, so this note would have paid for 10,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
