Germany · 1923

A 500 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 1 September 1923, printed on one side only. The front shows 'Fünfhundert Millionen Mark' with a large flourished initial on a patterned panel with a serrated edge, the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals, and a large 500 to the right. The text allows it to be called in from 1 January 1924. It dates from the final, most extreme months of the hyperinflation.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 September 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 75,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 6,667 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
