Germany · 1923

A 50 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 25 July 1923, printed on one side only. The front carries 'Fünfzig Millionen Mark' in Gothic lettering over a large maroon 50 and 'Millionen' underprint, with the directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text allows it to be called in from 1 September 1923. Notes like this were printed in enormous numbers as the German mark collapsed.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 25 July 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 300 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 166,667 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
