Germany · 1923

A 50 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 1 September 1923, printed on one side only. The front shows 'Fünfzig Millionen Mark' in black Gothic lettering on a lilac patterned panel, with the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text allows the note to be called in from 1 January 1924. It belongs to the flood of high-value notes printed during the German hyperinflation of 1923.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 September 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 75,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 667 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
