Germany · 1923

A 5 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 25 July 1923, printed on one side only. The front carries 'Fünf Millionen Mark' in large Gothic lettering, the promise to pay, the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals, with the serial number printed vertically at the side. The text allows it to be called in from 1 September 1923. It was issued during the summer of 1923 as the German hyperinflation gathered pace.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 25 July 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 300 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 16,667 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
