Germany · 1923

A 5 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 20 August 1923, printed on one side only. The front shows 'Fünf Millionen Mark' in bold Gothic lettering on a grey-green patterned panel with a serrated border, along with the directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text allows the note to be called in from 1 October 1923. It was one of many hastily printed notes issued during the German hyperinflation.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 20 August 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 1,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 5,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
