Germany · 1923

A 500,000 mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 25 July 1923, printed on one side only. The front is printed entirely in red, with 'Fünfhunderttausend Mark' in Gothic lettering, the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text allows the note to be called in from 1 September 1923. By that autumn, notes of this value were almost worthless as the German hyperinflation reached its peak.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 25 July 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 300 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 1,667 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
