Germany · 1920

A 50 mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 23 July 1920, issued as post-war inflation took hold. One side shows a farmer with a scythe and a worker with a sledgehammer either side of a central 50. The other side shows a young woman crowned with roses holding fruit, beside a German eagle and the value in Gothic lettering. Its imagery of agriculture and industry reflects the hopes of the early Weimar Republic.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 23 July 1920, an inland letter in Germany cost 40 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 125 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
