Germany · 1910

A 50 mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 21 April 1910, from the years before the First World War. One side carries 'Fünfzig Mark' in elaborate Gothic lettering, with small medallions of a helmeted female figure in the upper corners and the directors' signatures. The other side is dominated by a green star-shaped rosette bearing the value. The note dates from when the mark was still backed by gold, a link suspended in 1914.
What it boughtIn 1910 an inland letter in Germany cost 10 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 500 letters.
