A 5 mark Darlehenskassenschein (loan bank note) dated Berlin, 1 August 1917, issued by the Reich Debt Administration during the First World War. One side shows the imperial crown amid oak leaves on a green ornamental ground, with 'Fünf Mark' in large Gothic lettering and two eagle seals. The other side shows a portrait of a young woman with flowers in her hair, beside the imperial eagle. Loan bank notes supplemented Reichsbank notes to meet wartime demand for cash.

What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 August 1917, an inland letter in Germany cost 15 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 33 letters.
