Germany · 1923

A 20 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 1 September 1923, printed on one side only. The front shows the value 'Zwanzig Millionen Mark' in Gothic lettering with a large flourished initial on a green patterned ground, the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text states that it could be called in from 1 January 1924. It is one of many emergency high-value notes printed during the hyperinflation of 1923.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 September 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 75,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 267 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
