Germany · 1923

A 2 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 9 August 1923, printed on one side only. The front carries the value 'Zwei Millionen Mark' in Gothic lettering with a large decorative initial, a lilac rosette pattern on the right, the Reichsbank directors' signatures and two eagle seals. The text allows the note to be called in from 1 September 1923. It was issued as the German hyperinflation accelerated through the summer of 1923.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 9 August 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 1,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 2,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
