Germany · 1920

A 2 mark Darlehenskassenschein (loan bank note) dated Berlin, 1 March 1920, issued by the Reich Debt Administration; this is a recognised variety of the issue. The front has a large '2 Mark' on a maroon panel between green floral panels, with a red eagle seal and a row of signatures. The back shows two black eagles in roundels either side of the value on a patterned ground. Small notes like this circulated as coins were withdrawn during the early inflation.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 March 1920, an inland letter in Germany cost 20 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 10 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
