A 2 mark Darlehenskassenschein (loan bank note) dated Berlin, 12 August 1914, issued by the Reich Debt Administration at the start of the First World War. The front shows the value in black Gothic lettering over a red ornamental design, with the imperial eagle and a warning against forgery. The back shows the imperial eagle within an ornate red roundel flanked by numerals. Loan bank notes were issued to ease wartime cash shortages.

What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 12 August 1914, an inland letter in Germany cost 10 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 20 letters.
