Germany · 1923

A 10 million mark Reichsbank note dated Berlin, 25 July 1923, printed on one side only. The front carries the denomination in black Gothic lettering over a large '10 Millionen' underprint, with the signatures of the Reichsbank directors and two eagle seals. The text states that the note could be called in from 1 September 1923. It was printed at the height of the German hyperinflation, when new high denominations were needed every few weeks.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 25 July 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 300 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 33,333 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
