Germany · 1923

Issued by the Reichsbank and dated 22 August 1923, printed on one side only. The front carries the value in Gothic lettering on a pale green patterned background, with two eagle seals and the directors' signatures. The text states that the note could be called in from 1 October 1923. It was issued at the height of the hyperinflation, which ended in November 1923 when the Rentenmark replaced the paper mark at one trillion to one.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 22 August 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 1,000 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 10,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
