Germany · 1923

Issued by the Reichsbank and dated 25 July 1923, printed on one side only to save time and cost. The front carries the value in large bold lettering over a green underprint, with two eagle seals and the directors' signatures. The text warns that from 1 September 1923 the note could be called in and exchanged. It belongs to the height of the German hyperinflation, when new notes lost value within weeks.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 25 July 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 300 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 333 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
