Back

Issued by the Reichsbank and dated 1 February 1923. The front shows a portrait of a young man in a broad cap, after a painting by Hans Holbein the Younger, beside the value in Gothic script and two eagle seals. The back shows the value in an ornate oval with decorative rosettes. It was issued early in 1923, when prices in Germany were rising so fast that ever larger denominations were needed.

What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 1 February 1923, an inland letter in Germany cost 50 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 2,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
