Germany · 1922

A smaller version of the Reichsbank 10,000 mark dated 19 January 1922. The front shows a portrait of a young man in a cap, based on a painting by Albrecht Dürer, beside the value in Gothic lettering and two eagle seals. The back shows a stylised eagle behind a large 10000 framed by ornamental panels. It was issued as the post-war inflation was accelerating, a year before the currency collapsed completely.
What it boughtOn the date printed on it, 19 January 1922, an inland letter in Germany cost 2 marks to post, so this note would have paid for 5,000 letters. By December 1923 the same letter cost 100 billion marks.
