A Reichsbank 1,000 mark dated 10 October 1903 (Pick 23), the earlier and much scarcer date of this design, which was reissued with the date 21 April 1910. At the time 1,000 marks was a very large sum, several months' wages for most workers.
What it boughtIn 1903 an inland letter in Germany cost 10 pfennig to post, so this note would have paid for 10,000 letters.
