Chamber of Commerce of Châteauroux and the Indre · France · 1920

A local emergency note issued by the Chamber of Commerce of Châteauroux and the Indre to ease the coin shortage after the First World War. The front shows a château above a multi-arched bridge over the Indre, and the back carries a portrait of the novelist George Sand, who lived in the region; it was issued on 11 August 1920, was valid until 10 May 1925, and was printed by P. Mellottée to a design by A. Laprade. Notes like this are catalogued in specialist French references such as Jean-Pirot rather than in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money.
