50 fen, foreign exchange certificate

A Bank of China Foreign Exchange Certificate showing the Temple of Heaven in Beijing beside an ornate guilloche rosette, with English and Chinese text on the reverse. These certificates were issued from 1980 to foreign visitors in exchange for hard currency and could only be spent at designated outlets, such as Friendship Stores, until they were withdrawn in 1995.
