A 500 cruzados novos note of the Banco Central do Brasil, overprinted 500 cruzeiros when the cruzeiro was restored at par in 1990. The front shows the naturalist Augusto Ruschi, named on the note, with an orchid behind the overprint. The back shows him among orchids, with a hummingbird in flight. Ruschi was a leading authority on hummingbirds and campaigned for the protection of Brazil's Atlantic Forest.
