Issued by the Banco Central do Brasil in the 1970s, after the cruzeiro was restored in 1970. The front shows Emperor Pedro I in a round medallion, in a high-collared uniform. The back shows a historic city square crowded with people and soldiers, with a monument in the foreground, also in a medallion. Pedro I declared Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822 and became its first emperor.
