Issued by the Banco Central do Brasil from 1981, in a series designed to read the same way up from either end. The portrait side shows Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias, twice, one image inverted against the other. The other side shows soldiers in battle with crossed sabres laid over the scene. Caxias was Brazil's leading nineteenth-century general and is the patron of the Brazilian army.
