Issued by the National Bank of Belarus in 1992, the year after independence from the Soviet Union. The front shows the colonnaded building of the Academy of Sciences in Minsk among trees, beside a square of folk ornament. The back carries the Pahonia, a mounted knight with raised sword and a shield bearing a double cross, which served as the national emblem until 1995. Rapid inflation in the early 1990s soon made higher values necessary.
