A municipal emergency note (Notgeld) issued by the town of Berndorf in Lower Austria, dated 16 April 1920. It shows the town arms with a rampant bear above a fir tree and a wheat sheaf, framed by ornate green lettering, and the reverse explains that the notes were issued to relieve the shortage of small change and were valid until 31 December 1920. Such notes were issued by many Austrian towns in the post-war period and are catalogued in specialist Notgeld references rather than the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money.
